These quilting books have pieced and appliqued projects to suit every taste.

Whether you prefer pieced or appliquéd quilts, the American Quilter’s Society publishes practical, inspiring books. Reviews for several of their recent releases follow.

Nine-Patch Extravaganza

By Judy L. Laquidara, Nine-Patch Extravaganza introduces 12 exciting, pieced bed quilt projects. Some of these are standard nine-patch blocks. Others feature innovative stars, pinwheels, and hourglass blocks made from simple and easy triangles. For some projects, the designer offers variations for the borders.

This has easy-to-follow, step-by-step, color illustrated directions for creating the blocks, borders, and quilt tops. There are handy cutting charts along with a list of fabrics needed for each quilt.

This title also includes general instructions for all the quilting basics. It covers everything from choosing and cutting fabrics to adding borders and finishing quilts.

Love to Machine Appliqué–A Medley of Techniques

This title is by Caroline Price. The author carefully explains what supplies and sewing aids are needed for machine appliqué.

She shows how to properly apply the appliqués with the recommended machine stitches.

In addition to standard appliqué, the author also covers three special types: 3D, bias, and reverse.

This title has nine, fresh and appealing, appliqué projects, including one for Valentine’s Day and seasonal projects for summer and fall.

There are simple, color illustrated, step by step directions for all the techniques and projects. For each project, there is a chart showing what fabrics and supplies you’ll need, and a cutting chart along with easy instructions for completing the quilt top.

The appendix contains all the basics on quilting, such as assembling the quilt layers, doing the quilting, and binding the edges.

One-Patch Scrap Quilts

By Pat Yamin, this is part of the Quilt Savvy Series. This paperback has a hidden wire-o binding so the pages open flat. It has color photos as well as black and white sketches.

This easy to use guide features 36 pieced projects that are made from a single pattern piece. These designs are perfect for using scraps you have on hand. There is a full-size template for each quilt.

This includes projects for all skill levels from novices to the experienced. The blocks are arranged into sections by the degree of sewing skill needed.

In the introduction, the author explains all the basics from selecting fabrics to buying or making your templates and doing the quilting.

At the end of the book is a quick reference chart showing the different templates and the page number on which each block can be found.
