Celebrate the new season with some autumn quilt projects featuring pumpkins and other familiar fall themes.

The intense heat of summer days gives way to the richness of fall. Celebrate the new season with some autumn quilt projects. Whether you prefer appliqué or patchwork, fall quilt patterns are widely available in fabric stores, quilt shops, and other sources. To get you started, here are some suggestions.

Pumpkin Projects

Pumpkins and jack-o-lanterns continue to be a favorite fall quilt theme. For Halloween, Cedar Creek Quilt Designs has a quick and easy appliqué pattern, Pumpkin Parade. This pattern includes two versions with the larger being a wall hanging (27 inches by 33 inches) and the smaller one a placemat. You could easily finish these in a weekend. This pattern is super quick since the appliquéd, snaggle-toothed jack-o-lanterns are all cut as a single piece. These appear on a black background with a fall print for the borders.

Mt. Redoubt Designs has a number of memorable, pumpkin-inspired wall hanging designs by renowned artist/designer Letitia Hutchings. These artistic quilts are so gorgeous they’ll change the minds of confirmed pumpkin haters. Harvesting Dreams depicts a pumpkin and gourd on a star-lit blue background surrounded by a beautiful purple print border. This wall hanging measures 24 inches by 30 inches. It uses a combination of pieced and appliqué techniques.

Also from Mt. Redoubt is Sweet Addiction. This shows a fashionably dressed witch in fancy boots, who has discovered a passion for candied apples and other Halloween sweets. She sits atop a pumpkin in a field with her friend, an owl, hovering overhead. On the ground are empty, pumpkin-shaped, trick-or-treat bags she has snatched from unsuspecting children. In the blue night sky, the moon is partially obscured by the clouds. This design combines pieced blocks with appliqués.

Some quilt books with fall projects

Among the Thimbleberries projects are pillows, table runners, table toppers, wall quilts, and throws. For a coordinated fall display, make the pumpkin patch table runner and the matching pumpkin patch wall quilt. This title features full-size pattern pieces and color-illustrated, step-by-step directions.

Indygo Junction has a perfect pattern book for autumn. Humble Spirits is by Tamara Vandergriff. Among the 21 projects in this useful title is the delightful autumn wall hanging from which this book gets its name. This design features a pumpkin-headed figure in a black hat with a crow perched on the top. Very suitable for beginners, this project works up fast and easy with large square and rectangular blocks made from fall prints. It also includes some easy appliqués. This book contains full size pattern pieces and easy to follow step-by-step instructions.
