Careful preparation when making the paper templates for English paper piecing helps to provide a good finish. Here are some thoughts on the best way to achieve this.

The first thing to do when preparing to make a piece of patchwork sewn using the English Paper Piecing method is to create the paper templates. This can be done in a number of ways.

Traditional Method of Making Patchwork Templates

Traditionally accurate templates are made and the needleworker draws round the smaller template which is the finished size of the patchwork piece required with a sharp pencil to make the necessary number of paper pieces. A rollerball pencil is a good type to use as it remains sharp throughout, but care needs to be taken that the template does not shift as it is being drawn around.

Graph Paper Method of Making Patchwork Templates

Graph paper is excellent for producing really accurate templates. Isometric graph paper can be bought for creating triangles, 60 degree diamonds and hexagons, and their derivative shapes. The more normal squared graph paper can be used for triangles, rectangles and squares. Graph paper can also be taped together to create templates larger than the sheet of paper, but the taping must be done carefully so that there is no inaccuracy at the paper join.

Computer Method of Preparing Patchwork Templates

Computer programmes such as the www.electricquilt.com software are excellent for producing accurate templates which can be printed out and then cut out. This can save a great deal of time.

Type of Paper to Use for Creating Patchwork Templates

Whatever method is used to create the templates it is important to remember that throughout the patchwork being made, the paper should be the same weight. It's no good using 80 gsm photocopy paper for some parts and 90 gsm writing paper for other parts because this may lead to inaccurate work.

In addition it's better to use slightly heavier paper (90 gsm writing paper) as it will be easier to feel the edges of the paper when folding the fabric over it to baste the piece before sewing the seams. Even brown wrapping paper works well but it's better to use white paper because coloured paper can shine through the fabric, changing the appearance of its colour.

Do not use newspapers, old magazines or other printed materials; the ink can rub off onto the fabric and may be impossible to remove.

Accuracy is Paramount when Creating Patchwork Templates

Accuracy is most important. If hand drawn templates are being used, small inaccuracies can build up, especially if the pencil slips slightly or the scissors slip during cutting. If the latter happens it is usually better to discard the piece and start again. Practice as always makes perfect and template making skills will improve as time goes on.
