Although Valentine's Day is the most obvious time to stitch up one of these heart blocks, you can make one or more for any occasion just to say "I love you".
There are many ways to choose the perfect block for your project. You may like how the completed block looks; you may choose one based on your skill level; you may pick a block because the name has special meaning to you; or you may prefer a specific way of making the block.
Below you'll find lists of three different types of blocks: Pieced, appliqued, and foundation. Because of the round tops of the heart motif, applique is the usual way of creating a block, but if you don't mind sharper corners you can try a regular pieced or foundation pieced block. None of these blocks needs to be sewn in traditional Valentine's colours of red or pink: choose the colour for your block that touches your own heart best.

Quilt blocks can also be created through other ways, rather than plain stitching, as the links below show. These hearts or "kisses and hugs" (x's and o's) patterns provide you with different ways of expressing your love. The Redwork and Silk Ribbon Embroidery patterns may simply be framed, rather than quilted.

After you're finished making you quilt, or if you have a quilt top you want to finish, you may choose one to quilt it with one of these designs or motifs. These are patterns that you trace or transfer to your quilt top, and then stitch (by machine or by hand) into the quilt.
