This cuddly crib-size quilt makes a great baby gift or warm lap quilt. It's a perfect quilting project for beginners, or anyone who wants a cute, quick quilt.

Polar fleece makes very soft quilts. It’s thick and non-raveling, which means you can quilt and appliqué the blanket in one easy step, without using batting or a binding. The optional backing makes this quilt twice as soft and warm, but if you want a lighter weight quilt, you can skip the backing and just use a single layer of polar fleece.

You can download and print free patterns for bunnies and hearts, or draw your own.

Materials:

  • 1 1/4 yards polar fleece for front
  • 1 1/4 yards polar fleece for backing (optional)
  • 1 yard white fleece for bunnies
  • 1/4 yard dark pink fleece for hearts
  • scraps of blue and pink felt or fleece (or embroidery floss or fabric paints)
  • white thread
  • sewing machine with zigzag stitch

Prepare the Fabric

  1. Trim the selvages off the front and optional backing fleece. These edges will be the top and bottom of the quilt.
  2. Spread the front and backing fabrics out on top of each other.
  3. Smooth out any wrinkles so that both fabrics lie completely flat, then pin them together around the edges.
  4. Stitch along each side, 1/4” from the edge, using a decorative or zigzag stitch.

Heart and Small Bunny Appliqués

  1. Cut 10 small bunnies from white fleece.
  2. To make the eyes and noses, cut small pieces of blue and pink felt or fleece. Position the eyes and noses on each bunny, then hand stitch them in place. Or, embroider faces or create them with fabric paint.
  3. Cut 6 small hearts and 4 large hearts from dark pink fleece.
  4. Position the 4 large hearts in the corners.
  5. Position the bunnies and small hearts around the edge of the quilt, alternating hearts and bunnies.
  6. Pin all the hearts and bunnies in place, then zigzag stitch around each one. This attaches the appliqués and does the quilting at the same time!

Large Bunny Appliqué

  1. Cut 1 large bunny from white fleece.
  2. Cut 2 large bunny eyes from blue felt, and 1 large nose from pink felt. Position the eyes and nose on the bunny’s face and stitch them in place. Or, embroider the face or draw it with fabric paint.
  3. Cut 1 small heart from dark pink fleece. Pin the heart to the center of the bunny.
  4. Optional: Cut 1 small heart from light pink fleece. Trim this heart slightly smaller and place it on top of the dark heart in the center of the bunny to make a double-layered heart.
  5. Zigzag stitch around the edge of the heart(s), then fold the bunny’s arms over the heart(s).
  6. Pin the arms in place, then zigzag stitch around them.
  7. Place the bunny in the center of the quilt, then pin and stitch it in place.
